Synthetic brooms may cost a bit less but they can’t touch the beauty and utility of this Shaker-style broom, created by the students at Berea College in Kentucky. Each broom is made from hand rolled and braided natural straw, with a sturdy hardwood handle with leather loop to provide years of use. These natural materials help to keep plastics out of our environment. Berea College was founded in 1855 as the first coeducational and interracial institution in the South. Berea College charges no tuition—the sale of student-made crafts provides academic scholarships for Berea students and keeps Appalachian craft traditions vibrant and relevant.
