Not long ago, we enjoyed a trip to northern Italy’s autonomous province of South Tyrol, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire prior to World War I. As part of our trip, we booked an all-too-brief stay at Vigilius Mountain Resort, which has something of a mythic status within its niche of modern mountain resort properties. Perched at 1,500 meters above the town of Lana, Vigilius offers visitors a unique blend of modern design and natural surroundings. Accessible only by cable car, the cable car journey to the resort adds an element of adventure, creating a sense of retreat from the demands of everyday life. The resort's remote location ensures a peaceful atmosphere, while providing breathtaking views of the Italian Alps.
Architecture in Harmony with Nature
The architectural concept behind Vigilius Mountain Resort was brought to life by renowned architect Matteo Thun. Inspired by nature itself, Thun designed the resort to resemble a fallen tree, with a wooden lattice facade that blends seamlessly into the surrounding forest and meadows. His use of natural materials such as larch wood, clay, and stone reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability while creating an aesthetic that is both modern and rustic.
Sustainable and Eco-Conscious Design
As Italy's first Klimahaus-A certified hotel, Vigilius Mountain Resort emphasizes sustainability and resource efficiency. The building is designed to minimize heating demand and uses biomass, including wood chips sourced locally, for its energy needs. Large glass surfaces allow natural light to flood the interiors, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and providing a closer connection to the surrounding landscape.
Design Elements That Elevate the Experience
The resort's interiors feature an elegant simplicity, emphasizing natural materials and clean lines. Spacious rooms with solid wood plank flooring are thoughtfully designed, offering guests private balconies or patios to enjoy the panoramic views. The swimming pool and spa facilities, overlooks an Alpine meadow, enhancing the connection between the built environment and nature.
Now in its 22nd year, Vigilius Mountain Resort stands as a testament to Matteo Thun's vision of thoughtful design and ecological responsibility. With its striking location and commitment to sustainability, the resort serves as an inspiring example of modern hospitality in harmony with the environment.
