New Traditions: Nousaku

New Traditions: Nousaku

Nousaku Corporation is a renowned Japanese metalworking company based in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. Takaoka has been a center for metal casting since the early years of the Edo period (1603–1868). Founded in 1916, Nousaku historically specialized in crafting Buddhist ritual objects and Japanese tea sets. As demand for these traditional items declined in recent decades, the company expanded its product range to include interior design items and tableware with a modern aesthetic.

Yet Nousaku’s dedication to classic craftsmanship remains unchanged. Working primarily in brass and tin, Nousaku is known for its traditional hand casting techniques, which involve creating sand molds and pouring molten metal into them. The items are then carefully finished by hand. The sand molds create a unique textural effect on each item, adding to their appeal. Eco-friendly silicone molds are used for items that require more complex and precise details.

While deeply rooted in tradition, Nousaku also embraces innovation. They developed the world's first 100% pure tin tableware. Tin is naturally anti-bacterial and imparts no flavor, making it ideal for serving food and beverages. Tin sake cups are especially valued, as it believed that tin mellows the flavor of sake and highlights its complex flavors.

The company's factory is open to the public, offering a factory shop, café, factory tours and hands-on workshops where visitors can experience traditional brass and tin casting techniques. The public reception area of the facility is visually stunning, with a pale wood interior, ample glass walls that bring the outdoors in, and an accent wall consisting of tin sheathing.

Nousaku has received numerous awards for its design and craftsmanship, including the Good Design Award in Japan and the Golden Pin Design Award in Taiwan. We were delighted to visit Nousaku's beautiful facility on a recent trip to Japan and we're honored to present their products in our shop.
